Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nagasaki University
Hello
Thank you for visiting our page. My name is Yuko Akazawa. I have been appointed professor of tissue and cell biology at the Nagasaki University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences as of October, 2022.
I entered the Nagasaki University Second Internal Medicine Department and started my career as a physician. There, I became fascinated by the phenomena in the human body through CT, endoscopic images, and pathological images. From 2006 to 2009, I studied molecular and cellular biology on fatty acid-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress in hepatocytes in Dr.Gregory Gores at the Mayo Clinic. I have been interested in cell organelles that change their shape in various ways, and while working as a gastroenterologist, I have continued research on cell stress at Nagasaki University.
From 2013, I joined the Department of Pathology and stepped into the world of organizations. We conducted a study on visualization of cellular DNA damage responses under stress through tissues. Human tissues are generated from a single cell, and the basic structure is actually common to all organs.
In our Department of Tissue and Cell Biology, Dr. Kazuho Nakane developed an enzyme-antibody method that visualizes the localization of proteins in tissues, and Dr. Takehiko Koji contributed to a method for visualizing mRNA expression in tissues by in situ hybridization.
Our office is located in theSakamoto Campus of Nagsaki University in Nagasaki City. We conduct team research across the departments and institution, including cancer prognosis prediction and DNA damage response analysis using AI. We believe that a flexible strategy that responds to the ever-changing world is crucial. Diversity is the key to our development as collective intelligence. In our department, we would like to recruit researchers from various backgrounds and strive to develop human resources who can play an active role internationally. Please feel free to contact us.
