Department of Histology and Cell biology, Nagasaki University
Graduate School of Medicine

Inclusion, Motivation, and Ambition
We value diversity and internationality, and aim to provide an education that fosters interest and motivates students to strive for greater heights.
Lectures for medical students
Our department is primarily responsible for histology and embryology classes. Embryology is a class that explores how the tissues of the human body are formed and how we have become what we are today. Questions related to embryology are also included in national exams. This is an important class that teaches normal development and then touches on diseases caused by abnormal development.
In histology, students learn about the structure of the human body under a microscope. The microscopic human body is a world that can be described as a dense microcosm. Let's learn together! In 2023, we began using digital slides for practical training. This method allows students and instructors to view and teach the same screen. Students can also save the slides to their own devices for review. Over 95% of students responded that they prefer digital slides to traditional microscopes for practical training. We have uploaded review videos of microscopic images to LACS, so please make use of them.
Guidance for graduate students
Our department's motto is "building a bridge between basic and clinical research," and we conduct research that allows medical graduate students to contribute to patients through a single tissue slide. We also provide basic support for clinical graduate students' research that can resolve questions in medical practice. We also accept master's students from the Department of Disaster and Radiation Medicine. Our current main research theme is the study of gastrointestinal diseases such as cancer and inflammation. For example, we are working on identifying prognostic risks through fibrosis analysis of colon cancer, analyzing gene damage responses in ulcerative colitis and hepatitis, and using AI to diagnose esophageal achalasia.
We have evolved to this point through collective intelligence. Diverse perspectives are essential to the development of our classroom. We place great importance on internationalization and aim to welcome graduate students from a variety of backgrounds.
